Radzhab Butaev Bio
Fighting out of Indio, California, welterweight contender Radzhab Butaev has risen through the 147-pound ranks and is ready to make a name for himself against the division's elite.
An Amazing Amateur
Radzhab Butaev was born in the small Russian town, Salsk, but raised as the younger of two siblings in Khasavyurt some 418 miles away.
Exposed to martial arts during his youth, including freestyle wrestling, Butaev was nine years old when he and older brother entered a boxing gym to begin training.
“During our school years, we had to fight a lot,” said Butaev, who idolized Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. “I think that this is also a kind of training and preparation that builds temper and character from childhood.”
Butaev’s come-forward aggression produced an amateur record of 453-9 over tournaments in four countries. This included gold medals at the 2011 National Youth Championships, the 2013 Kazan Summer Universiade, and a runner-up finish in the Russian National Championships in 2012 and 2015 with a 2014 gold medal in that same event.
Butaev also went 9-1 over the course of nine World Series of Boxing contests, with amateur wins over Olympic and World Gold medalist Roniel Iglesias, Olympic and World Silver medalist Denys Berinchyk and Olympic bronze and World Champion silver medalist Andrey Zamkavoy.
Being physically strong with a solid jab, potent left hook and proficient body attack, Butaev employs head movement and a highly-head guard defensively, even as he often exposes himself to inflict damage.
“Radzhab Butaev is a very strong, fearless fighter,” said trainer Joel Diaz of Butaev, who has one nickname, “The Python,” for his malevolent intent. “Butaev is devastating when he’s going to the body. He can break down anybody to the body and has no mercy.”
“No Mercy” is the other nickname for Butaev, who turned professional in 2016. He remained unbeaten although in November 2019, he suffered a decision loss to Russian southpaw Alexander Besputin which was later changed to a No Contest when Besputin tested positive for a banned substance, leaving Butaev at 12-0 (9 KOs).
Taking The Title
Butaev won his next fight in December 2020 by third-round knockout over Terry Chatwood, who entered at 9-0-1 (5 KOs), setting up an October 2021 clash with 6-foot-2 WBA 147-pound champion Jamal James.
Butaev had a performance of a lifetime while dethroning James via ninth-round TKO. He alternated from orthodox to the southpaw stance and outlanded “Shango” 175–121 in overall punches, including 36 body shots with a 46 to 36 edge in landed jabs.
“We worked hard on switching up and did it in sparring, and it worked, so we kept doing it,” said Butaev, who led on two judges’ cards and trailed on the third. “I thought James showed a lot of heart tonight, but I thought the fight was stopped at the right time. I felt it could have ended a lot worse.”
James was stopped for the first time in his career.
“This was very important. This is a big step for me, but it’s only my first step,” said Butaev, who has sparred former IBF welterweight belt holder Shawn Porter and left-handed WBO junior middleweight titlist Demetrius Andrade.
However, on April 16, 2022, Butaev would lose the title via 12-round unanimous decision to the unbeaten Eimantas Stanionis. It was a hard-fought, brutal battle between two fighters who refused to give an inch.
“The fight went like this because the referee allowed Stanionis to fight with his head down the entire time,” Butaev said. “What can I do if the guy is leading with his head down all the time? I don’t know why he took away a point from me. They should have taken the point away from him because he was diving in the whole time.”
On November 6, 2023, Buataev bounced back with a third-round TKO over Fazliddin Gaibnazarov in his native Russia.
