The two-division world champion wins the 2018 Briscoe Awards' Knockout of the Year for his thrilling stoppage of Brandon Rios in February 2018.
Danny “Swift” Garcia continues to build his homegrown legacy.
Philadelphia’s Garcia is the winner of the Briscoe Awards’ “2018 Knockout of the Year” for his February 2018 ninth-round stoppage of Brandon Rios.
The awards, which take place on Sunday, April 14, are named after Philadelphia middleweight boxing legend Bennie Briscoe and have been recognizing the best achievements of the Philly boxing scene since 2007.
Garcia, 34-2 (20 KOs), is one of the best fighters to emerge from the fight-rich city. He was a unified world champion at super lightweight and also held the WBC world welterweight title.
This is Garcia’s fifth Briscoe Award and his first for best knockout. Garcia-Rios was an exciting affair early on. Garcia wore Rios down with his heavy artillery before blasting out the former champion with two knockdowns in round nine. The second knockdown was a picture-perfect overhand right to the jaw that sent Rios crashing to the floor, and ultimately ended the fight.
Garcia returns on Saturday, April 20, when he takes on the dangerous Adrian Granados at Digital Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The bout headlines a PBC on FOX show (8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT).
