Plenty of fighters crave the Spartan, distraction-free confines of a training camp far from their hometowns. For Shawn Porter, though, it was an easy choice to keep his camp where he makes his home, and where he’ll be fighting Adrien Broner—in Las Vegas, the last city in the country anyone could describe as “Spartan.”
This fight we especially want to keep everything in house because the fight is here,” he said. “Anything we need we’ll ship it in, we will get it ready.”
Training out of his regular gym just west of the Las Vegas Strip, Shawn Porter eschewed going up to the Bay Area in California, something he and his team have done in the past.
Instead, he’ll opt for the creature comforts of home, where he can do things like watch the Cleveland Cavaliers try to hold off the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.
“I have a projector screen and I like to turn it up loud and feel like I’m there,” he said.
Maybe LeBron can come over next week for workouts when the finals are over with. Porter is hoping to have the crib tricked out even more by then.
“We do have a few people here right now there that are working on our gym,” Porter said. “Hopefully it will be a week or two before the fight and we can get in there and do some things, play around a little bit. Other than that, massages will be done at home, icing, hot baths, all that stuff. This is the perfect opportunity for us to prepare the right way that we need to prepare for this fight.”
