It’s been more than five years since Casey Guerrero had a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Now Robert Guerrero is trying to make sure that everyone who needs it will be able to get the same kind of care his wife did.
Robert Guerrero is in Arkansas trying to set the world record for bone marrow donor registries in a 24-hour period.
Robert Guerrero is partnering up with Arkansas Tech University for BeTheMatch.org, trying to break the world record for most bone marrow registries in a 24-hour period. The drive continues through 9 p.m. CT today on the university campus.
Casey Guerrero was diagnosed with leukemia in 1997. In 2010, when she was told that a marrow transfusion was her only chance of survival, Robert vacated his title and bowed out of a fight with Michael Katsidis to be by his wife’s side.
A German donor proved to be a match for Casey, who’s now a healthy mother to the Guerreros’ two children.
Volunteers interested in being placed on the registry only have to submit to a cheek swab, which gives medical professionals at Be the Match a sample to compare human leukocyte antigen protein markers against patients who need a transplant.
