Before there was any kind of celebration, Cunningham, who is now a pastor in Las Vegas, led a prayer as the Porters and more than a dozen friends and family bowed their heads. Shortly after, the soft-spoken Porter talked about how his game plan was to fight a more subtle, calm fight.
That calmness played out in the week leading up to the fight, as Shawn Porter’s only answer to Adrien Broner’s antics was a slight smile and a steady stare. He finally repaid all the hype with a bruising unanimous decision, and in the process delivered an early Father’s Day present to his dad and trainer, Kenny Porter. Even still, there was no grand celebration coming after the fight, keeping in line with Porter’s always-in-third-gear approach.
“Church tomorrow,” Porter laughed. “Enjoying my family and friends right now, and getting back to work a few days later.”
The win puts Porter at 26-1-1 (16 KOs) and gives him a two-fight winning streak after suffering his lone loss to Kell Brook last August. With a high-profile win over Broner under his belt, Porter now has a litany of options in the crowded 147-pound division.
And of course, there’s one name that any successful fighter has on his tongue above all others.
“We did the Battle of Ohio, now we want to do the Battle of Las Vegas,” Kenny Porter said. “We live right down the street from Floyd [Mayweather], about a mile and a half. We beat up your little brother. Let’s make it happen. That’s official.”
Not that Mayweather is the only option. Shawn Porter admitted he would be amenable to a potential rematch with Brook, and there’s no shortage of quality fights to be made with new opponents at 147. Mayweather himself suggested Porter should fight Errol Spence Jr., who was impressive Saturday night in a win over Phil Lo Greco, on the undercard of Mayweather’s planned fight in September.
Porter, though, wasn’t having any of it.
“As far as fighting Errol Spence on the Mayweather undercard?” Porter said. “I’m not looking for any more Mayweather undercards. We were looking to get on the Mayweather-Pacquaio undercard and it didn’t happen. Now I’m looking at Mayweather. I’m not looking at watching him fight after I fight. I’m looking at fighting him.”
