Errol Spence Jr. was preparing for one veteran. Now he’s going to face another come Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT).
Roberto Garcia was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout with Errol Spence Jr. (16-0, 13 KOs) for personal reasons. In his place, Phil Lo Greco (26-1, 14 KOs) will step into the ring with Spence in a fight airing live on NBC.
Lo Greco, 30, built up his résumé mostly in his native Canada before venturing abroad to campaign in Italy and New Jersey. His lone loss came at the hands of co-main event fighter Shawn Porter, who handed him a 10-round loss by unanimous decision in May 2013.
The two became friendly after the loss, and Porter helped Lo Greco prepare for his return to the ring against Rafael Cobos by sparring with Lo Greco in the weeks leading up to his March 6 fight in Las Vegas. Whatever they did, it worked, as Lo Greco nearly shut out Cobos over eight rounds at the MGM Grand’s Marquee Ballroom.
