Shimmying to Kendrick Lamar’s “I Love Myself” in the ring, three-division world champion Abner Mares wasn’t hurting for confidence as he engaged in a brief public workout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
“People are going to be surprised at how well I’m going to look when I fight this guy,” said Mares, who will take on Arturo Santos Reyes at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night. “I’m going to bring a little bit of extra excitement and showcase a great fight, because I want to make this look fantastic.”
Mares returns to the site of his last victory, a three-knockdown, fifth-round technical knockout of Jose Ramirez in December. He said he heard that Reyes has been getting tips from Jhonny Gonzalez, who shockingly knocked out Mares in the first round in August 2013.
“What is he going to tell him, to throw that left hand and hope that he connects? He didn’t out-box me; it was just a lucky punch,” Mares said. “But I’m not worried about that. I’m prepared to go out there and to give a great performance. I know that he’s a fighter that likes to come forward and throw a lot of punches, and that’s just the kind of guy who is going to bring the best out of me.”
