Bio

Luis Reynaldo Nunez Bio

Unbeaten featherweight Luis Nunez is one of the leaders in this Golden Era for Dominican boxing and one of boxing's most promising young fighters.

Born To Box

An eight-year-old Luis Nunez followed a friend into a local boxing gym against the wishes of his grandparents in his native Nagua of the Dominican Republic.

“My grandparents actually raised me, and I had a lot of trouble convincing them that I wanted to box and would get punished all of the time when my grandparents would find out that I went into the boxing gym," said Nunez, who “came from a poor background” but “had a good childhood” playing baseball.

"I just liked boxing better. I also had a lot of friends who boxed as well, so that's why I chose to box as opposed to playing baseball. It wasn't until I won a medal one time that I brought home that my grandparents actually realized that I was doing good. One of my former trainers went to my grandparents and told them, 'Listen, your grandson has talent. Let him box.' That's how my grandparents were convinced to let me box."

Nunez became an outstanding amateur with a reported record of 85-5, highlighted by gold medal win at the 2016 World Youth Championships among his number of national and international championships all over the world as a member of the elite Dominican national team.

“I will be a proud world champion from the Dominican Republic,” Nunez said. “I also want to improve the economic situation of my grandparents and parents who have given everything to me without asking for anything in return.”

An 18-year-old Nunez won his first professional bout in 2018. In total, he scored six knockouts that year.

Going 4-0 (2 KOs) in 2019, Nunez followed a six-round unanimous decision over Donny Garcia (March) with a first-round TKO of Jael Made in April, and a third-round TKO of Alfredo Mirabal in May with a 10-round unanimous decision over Eliezer Aquino in October.

"I started at 122, but I moved up to 126," said Nunez, "I wanted to see how I liked the weight. I don't have a problem making either of those weights."

A New Twist

Nunez's nickname, "The Twist," was given to him by his manager, Sampson Lewkowicz, who had a friendly relationship with the 1960’s performer of the song, Chubby Checker.

“Sampson came with the nickname ‘The Twist’ and he played the music and showed me the video, and that’s where it all started,” Nunez said.  “When I saw the dance, it’s something that stuck with me. I’m not sure what my opponent will think when he sees me doing the twist. Maybe he will take it as a joke."

If Nunez isn’t turning heads with his name, he continues to do so with his fists, stopping all three opponents in 2020.

Nunez won a pair of unanimous decisions in 2021, the first in eight rounds in May over Florentino Perez Hernandez, and the second in September over 10 rounds against previously undefeated Jayvon Garnett on Nunez’s 22nd birthday.

"I started off my career within the Dominican republic with developmental fights,” Nunez said. “As soon as I came to America, I was put into the ring with an undefeated fighter. I knew I was ready.”

"The Twist" went 3-0 (2 KOs) in 2022, with wins over unbeaten Carlose Arietta (January) and Jonathan Javier Fierro (May) and a fifth-round TKO of Renson Robles (December).

Nunez earned his most difficult victory to date in April 2023, with a 10-round unanimous decision over Christian Olivio.

"If they want to keep throwing me in with undefeated fighters, I'm ready for them," said Nunez, who improved to 19-0 (13 KOs). "I feel like I'm ready for any of the top guys. I don't need any more development fights. I'm ready."
